What Is REM Sleep Behavior Disorder?

REM Sleep Behavior Disorder (RBD) is a condition where individuals physically act out vivid, often intense dreams during REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep. These movements may include talking, shouting, punching, kicking, or jumping out of bed. Unlike normal REM sleep, where the body is temporarily paralyzed, people with RBD lack this muscle paralysis.

RBD can disrupt sleep for both the individual and their bed partner, and it may be an early warning sign of certain neurological conditions like Parkinson’s disease or Lewy body dementia.
