Nearly 15 years ago Dr. Samuels and colleagues determined that the standard in sleep quality screening, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), wasn't a one-size-fits-all. Specifically, it didn't provide an accurate assessment of sleep quality and requirements of high performance athletes. Because sleep is critical for both performance and recovery they set out to establish a sleep screening tool tailored to meet the needs of these elite athletes. After years of research, development and testing the Athlete Sleep Screening Questionnaire (ASSQ) was created.
Last week Dr. Samuels chatted with Jeff Krushell for his Krush Performance Podcast 'Krush Performance: Sleep Performance With Dr. Charles Samuels'. They discussed the ASSQ and its role in identifying sleep issues in athletes, and developing strategies and interventions when needed. They also touched on the efficacy of wearables and the impact of travel on performance. The interview begins at the 15:35 mark. Have a listen!
