A recent systematic review of the literature found athletes have a high prevalence of poor sleep quality (Gupta et al., 2016, Sports Medicine). Research from our group found one in four (25%) Canadian National Team athletes had a clinically significant sleep problem and needed further help from a sleep specialist (Bender et al., 2018, Sports Medicine â€“ Open). We could advise an athlete to be in bed for 10h a day to get the best recovery possible, but if they have insomnia, this would likely make the problem worse. This is why recommendations should be individualized to the athlete. We developed the Athlete Sleep Screening Questionnaire to quickly evaluate which athletes need clinical interventions and which athletes would benefit from education and monitoring.
